Mental Health in the Staffroom

Here’s a snippet from casual conversations playing out in school hallways everywhere.
Pick the one’s you’ve used or heard before.

“How are you? How’s it going? What’s up? How’s it?”

“Good. Great. All good here. Meh. No problems. Busy. So busy. Not too bad. OK. Top of the world ma!”

What would we do if the person speaking said, “I am having the worst day of my life. I don’t know if I can keep this up? I need help.” Would we pull out the motivational clichés, tell the person to toughen up, or just walk away after saying, “I hope you’re OK?”

How are you dealing with issues like this in your classroom? Do you feel overwhelmed yourself? Do you have a colleague or a place to go when you need support? Would you go? Ask for help? Are you running on empty?

Part of keeping your heart in tact while you practice this art comes from protecting your own state of mind. Students are not the only ones with feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and depression. In some cases, when surveyed, teachers have noted feeling excluded in their own staff rooms, or that they struggling with so many things at once. Key Causes of Teacher Stress

Working conditions, such as the following, may make teachers particularly vulnerable to depression:

  • Long working hours.
  • Lack of administrative support.
  • Excessive workload.
  • Large class sizes.
  • Lack of specialist teachers.
  • Unreasonable expectations.
  • Lack of necessary supports to do the job.

Thankfully there is help available, but it takes time, education, courage, and a supportive environment to work.

“Prolonged exposure to stress can cause serious health issues. Making a few, simple, lifestyle changes can reduce your stress level and lower your risk of depression. Protect yourself by:

  • taking control of your life, setting achievable goals at work and at home, and being realistic about what you can accomplish.

  • eating a healthy, balanced diet to maintain good mental and physical health.

As Winter days at school become more hectic, we need to be able to see the light from one another while we wait for the sunshine of Spring and Summer to warm us. Talk to someone, reach out, get involved in something where you can contribute, and be valued for your awesomeness. Take time to share some words of encouragement or conversation with each other. Perhaps, including the OTs at your lunch table when you can. It may make a world of difference for them and for you too.

A word or three about 2015

Last day to come clean. Tomorrow is January 1, 2016 – New Year’s Day on the Gregorian Calendar for those keeping score at home. It’s also a Leap Year too, so I wrote a lesson about it. With 365 days in the books and a great year ahead, I wanted to share a few words that have kept me hopping in 2015;

Resilience Patience Silence

Silence – In 2015, I worked really hard to step aside and listen. I learnt to listen to all of the voices in the room, not just the most frequent and loudest ones. By being silent more students were empowered to find and have their voices heard.

Silence took on another form in the classroom again in 2015. It meant that students had time to consolidate new ideas into enduring understandings in a calm and stress free environment. In 2015 we took time to be still and allow our minds to catch up from the daily bombardment of outside stimuli. We learnt about Mindfulness and how it can help in the classroom.

Patience – Patience is not a cliche, but a call to inaction at its purest. When I felt the most vulnerable in my practice as a teacher this word held me on the rails. I’ll admit, that there were times when it felt like that my life as an educator was only a penny left on the tracks away from a train wreck. At times when anxieties rose the word patience steadied me when I wasn’t feeling it that day.

Patience also guided my class room management style. Students need time, they need understanding, and they need someone in their corner while they work things out. Patience is like counting to 10. It can be the difference between a hasty [over]reaction or a thoughtful response. Patience is the lens by which we all need to see that things are not always as they appear.

Resilience – In 2015 the word resilience has worked its way to the top on a lot of lists as the 4th R in education. In my estimation, resilience is, and always will supersede the other Rs because it transcends the classroom.  We must allow students to ideate, learn, iterate, fail, succeed and repeat.

If all we are doing is programming students with the software from a curriculum, and never allowing them to test their own operating systems and hardware, then we are missing the chance to develop lifelong problem solving skills. Resilience is what makes first attempts in learning bigger than the FAIL acronym, by being the launch pad for lifelong learning.

Learning must be relevant to their lives, not ours. We cannot expect students to care about something totally antiquated and irrelevant to their world and future. Our role as knowledge mediums and intellectual fire starters is to kindle a spark of curiosity in students to become constant learners. Resilience can be developed by equipping and evolving real life problem solving skills now. My students are expected to do this everyday. As our class motto asks, “What are the real life problems you are solving today?”

So as the hours tick towards another new year I look back with appreciation on a great year of learning and look forward to another year ahead. May silence, patience, and resilience be part of your classroom in 2016. I know they will be part of mine.

The gift

It’s Monday.
I should be in the classroom right?
Nope, not this week, or the next one either (insert thoughts of appreciation here).

It’s the Winter break and millions of students and teachers are waking up to the first of 10 vacation days. WooHOO! My internal clock did not get that message. Neither did my clock radio alarm as it went off at 5:55 am as always. So as the chorus of Pat Benatar’s Love is a Battlefield blared, I pressed snooze for the first time since September.
15 minutes later I’m up, dressed, and drinking the first of the day’s many coffees. That’s enough sleeping in for one day.

It has been a hectic 4 months in the classroom.
The months have flown by at the speed of learning(my term).
Not that it’s a bad thing, but frenetic might be an apt single word descriptor.
With reports going home late this year, ongoing committees, teams and extra-curricular activities in full swing to accompany day to day instruction my schedule is full. Needless to say, free time is in short supply.

As the Christmas/Winter Holidays approached, students started hinting about gifts, our school concert, and ideas for class parties. Soon we were discussing clothing and toy drives and plans for the break.

1. “Mr G., I noticed you drink a lot of coffee. Would you like coffee for Christmas?”
2. “Can I volunteer to be an ambassador for the school concert?”
3. “Mr G., here are some toys I brought in for our toy drive. Can I bake some cookies for the class?”
4. “I don’t have a gift for you. I’m sorry.”

Here are my answers in order;

1. Yes please and that’s very thoughtful of you to ask.
2. Yes, you’d be a great ambassador. Thank you for stepping up.
3. What a kind gesture. Some cookies would be awesome as long as they are peanut free.
4. You do not need to apologize or give me a gift. Coming to class, everyday, willing to learn has been the best gift a teacher could receive, and you have been giving it since September. I should be giving you a present.

On the last day before the break we tidied the class, stacked desks, and arranged chairs in a circle for a social activity. Cookies, candy canes, and cheer were shared – along with fun draw prizes for every student. I was blessed with a number of thoughtfully worded cards and generous gifts including coffee(I can quit anytime).

While were all sitting in our social circle I began reflecting more on the conversation with the student who said he had no gift to give.  As I shared with him then, his gift to me arrived everyday in his hard work and positive attitude. I realized he had offered me another amazing gift – a chance to encourage my class; to let all of the students know how their hard work and desire to learn were the best gifts a teacher could ever receive.  So before the bells rang and the best wishes wished that gift was shared with the class.

As I look back on the first four months it is clear to see that the holidays in our class started in September because we gathered, we shared, and gifts were given.

Desks on the move

I did it. I rearranged the classroom. Strike up the band!

And I promise to do it again in the future. Even sooner if it suits the needs of our class. Admittedly, as a bonus, I enjoy seeing the reactions of students as they discover their new, albeit temporary, learning spots.

Our classroom is on its 4th layout since September*, and the response from students remains positive. In fact, for the past 5 years, I have intentionally reorganized every  -learning space. And what’s resulted has helped my class room management, provided necessary/preferential seating opportunities for some learners, and contributed to a greater overall sense of community in class.

I like the way that August (Sandy) Merz III explains strategic seating in her Edweek.org post. In it Merz writes about “power seats and safe zones” for students that are intended to “magnify a student’s presence or…downplay a student’s actions on class dynamics.” I find changing the physical space provides a not so subtle, yet effective way to allow students to bloom where they’re planted. All the while maintaining a mindful eye on the specific needs of learners.

I’ve observed that each time the desks get rearranged, there is potential for new conversations, collaborations, fresh perspectives, and even friendships. It can also be a strategic, and crucial component of effective classroom management. Changing the classroom layout also allows students an opportunity to develop problem solving and inter-personal skills. Although infrequent, whenever students are unable to work within an iteration of the seating plan it becomes a teachable moment.

Allowing students a voice in the process leads to advocacy skills too. If students are not taking to their new spots, or ask to move, they must be able to provide a good reason why. This includes some evidence of how they tried to resolve/overcome the issues before a request is considered.

After 3 months and 4 seating plans, with more to come, our class continues to evolve its own zones of power and safety where students are empowered to share, safe to collaborate, and grow as modern learners.

 

*To start the year students are allowed to choose their own seats from a pre-set arrangement of desks. This way I am allowed a glimpse at existing friendships, and the way the layout allows for sight lines to the various teaching spots(tech cart, whiteboard, middle of the class). This is especially important this year to provide a completely accessible space for a student using a motorized wheel chair. This means function must mesh with form like no other year. With 30 students in a class designed for 25, layout must be intentional, fluid and serve the needs of all students.

Teachers need to get away from each other. Once in a while.

Like you’ve never read that before?

I get excited when I learn something new and get to share it with my class and others in our profession – or with any one else, for that matter. Also not news.

I’m not alone in a relentless pursuit of learning. My wife can attest that my personality changes gears whenever the conversations turn to education. And why not? It’s like a spark plug ignites and a fire lights my mind.

With education, I’m in my happy place.*  When it comes to gatherings of educators, I always want to be there too. However, I recently declined to attend a conference. I even surprised myself by this decision, but was really happy my pass was able to allow another colleague to go in my place. This got me wondering. Why am I eschewing some educational events while gravitating towards others?

To wrestle with this I need to purge some myths(real or perceived) that might be affecting my decision to say yes or no to attend certain conferences going forward.

Myth 1: Everybody loves sitting and listening to speakers prattle on for endless hours? UGH!!! This is the antithesis to the differentiation we embody in the classroom. So why is it this way at education conferences so conferences? If I have to endure one more power point slide show with content I could read from home I’m done.

Many conferences feature speakers who are bringing published research and or their brand of common sense content to conferences. Theirs are messages which have already been shared among those actively engaged in a Twitter PLN. The exception being they are in the same room for a conference. Is it worth it? How do we extract a greater value from keynote speakers that cannot be taken from their books?

After 5 years of conferences, I struggle to find anything to rival Sir Ken Robinson, Sugata Mitra or Rita Pierson’s TED Talks as the last times my mind has been set ablaze with such a lasting impact. How can we curate moments like this when they only come around so rarely?

Yet, if you ask me about student speakers who have rocked my thought life? I only have to go back to my own school’s TED Ed Club weekly meeting, or the recently held TED Youth to find Ishita Katyal, Marta Botet Borras, Chelsea Ha or Raymond Wang. Perhaps a stronger student presence at educational conferences is necessary to bring the truth to educators?

Myth 2:
Everyone wants to view data sets gleaned from standardized tests ranking different nations, and then to applaud delegations from other countries supposedly doing education better than us? This bugs me. There seems to be an idolization of success from other countries around PISA results et al, but no tangible road map, context, funding models or political will to genuinely support change if that is what’s truly desired from seeing whether the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence.

I find this a Catch-22. They should pay our experts to visit them, and share what we do well. We have excellent systems in place that serve our students in an incredibly effective and affordable manner. Better yet, as an act of fiscal restraint and responsibility, why not cancel the visits and make a couple of Skype calls instead?

Myth 3:

Everyone feels good after their heart strings have been tugged on or torn out by a powerful narrative about the nobility of our calling? Me too. The myth is that the feeling lasts. I am touched by triumph, but am also disappointed that the fire cannot be stoked, maintained, and spread further beyond the ride home or at the next staff meeting.

How do we keep the fires burning by authoring our own every day success stories in the classroom. This might mean blogging, micro-blogging(Instagram, Twitter), and creating leadership opportunities beyond our comfort zones. If we stay close and connected we share in the warmth and encouragement of one another. This is a powerful tool against educational apathy that can happen after messages from educational conferences are long forgotten.

This year I have attended 2 Edtech  conferences (Connect 2015 & BIT15), a GAPPS type summit, 2 Ignite events, a TED conference, and most recently a Pechakucha. Of course, there were teachers at all of them hoping to learn, unlearn, and innovate what we love to do. What I discovered surprised me. The more the conferences were open to other voices and experiences, the better the level of engagement and interaction. Would education conferences benefit from having speakers and attendees from outside our hallowed halls?

Admittedly, I am a bit disappointed that the vibe and messages given at conferences dedicated solely to education have remained static year after year with few exceptions. Few, if any, big ideas from the past have been usurped by revolutionary and achievable new ones. There are some perennial favourite themes that have stood the test of time; engagement, mental health, literacy, numeracy, technology, student voice, and inclusion.  Worth noting that each plays a vital role in creating the conditions for successful modern learning. As the proverb says, “There is nothing new under the sun.”

Did I miss any? Trust me. That’s enough for a decade’s worth of growth and learning. So how about some time to embrace the messages in a meaningful and manageable manner?

Should there be a pause in education so that education can catch up with all of its ideas? How are any of these ideas ever going to be implemented without more time, commitment, and guidance/leadership?

And so it goes. Teachers gather, share ideas, share experiences, commiserate, and collaborate. Every week there is another conference somewhere, another keynote speaker plucked to expound the latest wisdom culled from a data herd unlike any other. Is that all there is left for us to change the world of education? What if we started meeting other professions at conferences and working alongside of them in workshops to solve real world problems facing our youth?

I propose to take a break from educational conferences to put into place some of the ideas that have been shared over the past few years. We all have some catching up to do.

*Anyone familiar with couple dynamics knows this can be a bone of contention in relationship politics. I am not prepared to admit this is a problem. However, let the record show, my wife is an understanding and patient person in this and several other areas of our 22 years of marriage.

Hallowe’en for the head, heart, and heck of it.

It’s October 30. It’s a Friday. That means it is the eve of all hallows eve. Hallowe’en, as if things aren’t strange enough on Fridays in the classroom. Days like today are good social opportunities that are fun and chaotic. However, they can also be awkward and stressful for some students.

In my class, the students have streamed in wearing a variety of amazingly well thought-out costumes, while others sport the same tops and pants they’ve worn all week. As they enter, the room’s giddiness level rises as students guess what the other is wearing followed by smiles, giggles, and compliments. The only way to describe the energy in the room is bristling.

There I was, last night,  purchasing student friendly treats in an aisle filled with other teachers doing the same. For some reason Hallowe’en is a day long permission slip to bend the healthy schools guideline, and it has been written by the candy companies. Or is it time to let off a little steam after 2 months in the classroom?

One way or another, there will be candy and other treats.

In our classroom that means; peanut free, sesame free, gelatin free, as well as a vegan option. When planning for days like today, it is important to understand the dietary diversity of our learners. This can be a great chance to learn about our students and celebrate our differences with one another.

At the start of this post I mentioned all of the amazing costumes that some students were proudly wearing, but not all. How do you ensure that all students feel included in your classroom? Do you offer an alternative to activities that some students are uncomfortable taking part in due to religious or other reasons? How can this moment be used to include students, rather than make them feel excluded?

This is also a great chance to discuss trick or treat strategies (candy, reflective clothing, manners) and safety on Hallowe’en night. My students love hearing about my 2 pillowcase candy retention system from the old days.

My class is having a party. It is student organized with the following requirements; inclusive of all students whether they are wearing a costume or not, treats must be peanut/sesame free, no gelatin gummies, sour keys etc that are not Halal friendly, and have fun.

This scene is playing out through the halls of our school with teachers and admin getting into the spirit as much as the students. Hope you have a ghoul time.

What would you do if someone answered honestly saying; “Not good. I’m being bullied by a group of students. I don’t like my body. My parents are divorcing. No one likes me. I feel alone and sad all of the time”? Would you pull out the motivational clichés and tell the person to toughen up? Would you walk away saying, “hope you’re OK?” and “things will be better with time” or would you inquire further? Would you feel comfortable finding out the truth? Do you have enough emotional energy in the tank to make a difference?

Regardless of years of experience, many new teachers feel uncomfortable, even under-equipped when facing mental health issues in the classroom After all, we’ve been taught pedagogy, not psychology, in teacher’s college. That’s not completely true. We did learn about Maszlow’s Hierarchy of Needs, but that was so long ago, it was only a small series of lessons/readings, and  besides we have lessons to deliver.

In this post I want to share a side of education that Maslowdoes not get enough attention. I’m talking about mental health in schools.

Understanding and supporting students with mental health issues is as important in our classrooms as the curriculum we are instructing.

What keeps educators awake at night are the the same daily problems being encountered in classrooms around the world. I am a witness to how mental health issues are scarring education. There is a recurring generational amnesia in the hallways of educational institutions and it’s time we do more about it.

That may not seem like a light and lively subject for conversation, but discussion in all of these areas is crucial as it pertains to making our classrooms safe and inclusive learning spaces. How are you dealing with issues like this in your classroom? Here are a few ideas that have helped in my learning space.

In my classroom we have worked hard to develop a safe space for all learners. This means that we all try to support each other when times get tough. We try to use the idea of Ohana (family) where no one is alone or forgotten. We have instituted Mindfulness Moments as brain breaks. Students need time to consolidate their learning, and to be still/quiet for a few minutes. This little break in the action calms the mind, reduces anxiety and teaches students a valuable de-stressing skill.

In my classroom, there is always a little something to eat. It is amazing how a granola bar, a juice box, and some crackers can help a student who has not had enough to eat to start the day. During tests, quizzes or quests, as we call them, we have “test crackers”.  They’re tasty, crunchy, and important to helping students relax during assessment tasks. I have found that when a student has something to eat, albeit very small, they are more relaxed and perform better.*

The Re-Org

Well, it’s bound to happen in any school once, but again? That’s new.

I teach in an amazing school in York Region that opened in Sept. 2014; right in the middle of a growing subdivision. Our original numbers for K to 8 seemed modest  at 300+ last year, and have since grown to over 5oo+ and rising in 2015.

Yup! Despite the statistical wizardry school boards use to construct population models, even the most seasoned actuaries struggle to solve an illusive problem in education, that of population growth or decline. As such, many schools like ours needed to be “re-organized”, and with that come a few highs and lows.

Re-Org

After months of prepping, planning and perspiring to start the year, our school has been re-organized to accommodate the incredible growth in our area. This week many students were introduced to new classes, new routines, new schedules, and new teachers. At the same time, teachers were introduced to new students,  had to choose which students to transition to new classes, rewrite plans/paperwork, and prepare for the possibility of different teaching assignments. None of which is ultimately a bad thing on its own, but to a new teacher it can be pretty daunting.

To outsiders, reorganization is something related to the business world that is usually a precursor to bankruptcy proceedings. In education it is merely a reality due to unpredictable student population growth and decline. Here’s a brief explanation as explained to parents;

“In order to comply with the Ministry class size reduction strategy, we have had to move small groups of students from many different classes. This process was done with emphasis put on academic needs, boy/girl ratios and social needs of students.”

In education it is an important measure to preserve government mandated class sizes in all elementary panels. As any teacher who has experience Re-Org knows, classes can be overcrowded to start the year. Frequently, JK/SK teachers can have 30 +/- , as can junior and intermediate teachers.

As students fill the classrooms to capacity and beyond, the need for more manageable class sizes becomes necessary and mandatory. This could mean more or less split/combined classes, new hires, surplusing, a complete reworking of teaching assignments, and or no change at all. Actual class sizes will then vary depending on the school, administrative creative class structuring, and or willingness to reorganize classrooms to accommodate what has been  “mandated” by lawmakers.

As a teacher it helps to be able to adapt/adjust and advocate for yourself when Re-Org happens. You are not alone. If you are new to teaching, ask for some support from your admin or a teacher who has gone through it before. Take time to communicate with students, clarify changes to schedules (yours and theirs), and collaborate with colleagues for resources, plans and curriculum content.

With school’s officially starting in September, it may not be until Re-Org in October when the routines, roll call, and real teaching can begin. You can do it.

My O.B.I.T (open biographical info time)

I ‘ve always wondered about the biography portion of blog sites. Do people read them?
If they do read that section, does it connect or disconnect them more to the writer?
Do the writers keep them updated? After all, it’s a two way street.

What happens when the blogger writes something disagreeable? Do readers continue subscribing to see what comes out next or is as Eminem says, “you only get one shot”?IMG_2116

What if the text is too vanilla? Oh? People like vanilla, but why read at all if it was the only flavour? And now it’s my turn to churn.

How many take time to reply in lieu of muttering to themselves or the closest ear?

So in the interest of transparency, glasnost, and nothing to hide here’s a bit about me.

My name is Will, I have been bullied and been a bully. I have failed in every possible way as a student and according to North American standards of success. I have also succeeded in a world that is overcrowded with enmity, ennui, and expectations to maintain the status quo.

Teaching is my 6th career. Restaurants, real estate, radio, writing and retail were its predecessors. Even though each job was different, they all contributed to a bigger understanding of life and in shaping my world view. Human interaction, failure, and resilience (stubbornness) have contributed also.

I did not start this chapter of life until my 40s. In a way it’s like Plutarch (a convenient hero), who in his 40s went to school, and then became the teacher of the emperor of Rome. Although, I have yet to teach an emperor, many noble minds have graced my classroom in my first 6 years. Along the way I found a series of opportunities and passions revealing themselves and opening my life up great things in and out of the classroom.

I am passionate about infusing social issues into every element of my classroom. My goal in the classroom is not to cram the crown onto the heads of my students, but to hold it above for them to rise to it. I love sharing TED Ed with teachers and students every chance I get. Through these posts I will be able to provide glimpses into the spaces where I teach and in between. Look for pieces about mental health, social justice, genius hour, success and failure as they relate to the teaching profession, our practice and those we are privileged to teach.

This is not a drill. We are live.

It’s the first day.
I’m alone in my classroom.
Wow! It’s so calm in here.
And why not? It is nearly 2 hours before the first bell of the new year.

Why do I feel so excited? Yet, at the same time like butterflies are barfing in my stomach? 

We’ve all thought about it, dreamt about it, and for many, myself included, stayed awake the night before thinking about it. Our first day. Albeit,  only for a moment, or as part of lifelong “professional reflection”, the first day of school evokes feelings of anticipation, excitement, fear, or fearcitement (my word).

Did I set my alarm? Am I dreaming? What will my students be like? What about the parents? Will admin be stopping by our class? Is everything organized? Did I pack a lunch? Where’s my coffee? What if they don’t like me?

If you’re experiencing anything from self-doubt to euphoria to start the year, take heart; you’re not alone. Whether this thought life is old hat or brand new for you; congratulations you’re a teacher. For many entering the classroom for the very first time, it is the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication to our profession.

In this new era, just landing a job is worthy of celebration in Ontario. So when you get a moment, set aside some time to take it all in.

It seems like only yesterday. I recall being there 2 hours before the first bell. I recall the faces of students and parents meeting the “new” teacher outside. I recall the first big breath taken before entering the classroom. I recall the sense of accomplishment knowing I survived. Moreover, I recall this where I began to thrive.

Thinking back on the excitement from my first days of school; I  appreciate how they have led to personal growth, professional friendships and constant learning.

So take some time and enjoy the moments that can only happen on a first day of school. Take time to watch the parents who are seeing their child off for the first time. Take time to notice the student who is standing off to the side trying not to make eye contact. Take time to be still and appreciate the world of difference you are about to make in the lives of your learners. Take time to get caught up in the excitement, and let it carry you through that first day.
